What is a patent and can it be protected?

A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention, which is a product or a process that provides, in general, a new way of doing something, or offers a new improved technical solution to an old problem. To obtain protection of one's patent, technical information and further research is advised in order to examine and deem the invention has not been patented already, and is a novel idea.

It is also always advised that the inventor doesn't share the details with the public as it will not be considered novel.
